In laywoman’s (lol) terms CBD is the abbreviation for Cannabidiol. It is one of over 100 naturally occurring chemicals called Phytocannabinoids that is found in the hemp plant. These are extracted from the plant during processing and are then added to tincture oils, edibles, skincare, and other items.

You’ve likely heard of THC. This is the phytocannabinoid that gives the user a “high” like that found in marijuana. Unlike marijuana, industrial hemp contains little to no THC, so it will never get you high or impair your mental state in a detrimental way.

These both come from the Cannabis Sativa Plant family, but that is really where the similarities end. Hemp and Marijuana are more like distant cousins with CBD and THC levels. These are the differences:

  • Hemp contains 0.3% or Less of THC – Marijuana contains 30-40% of THC
  • Hemp contains 30-40% of CBD – Marijuana contains 1-4% of CBD
  • Hemp derived CBD is nonpsychoactive (will never give you a high) – Marijuana is psychoactive (can give you a high)
  • Most Reputable CBD Brands will filter out this small amount of THC to make their CBD Oil Products completely THC Free

For both men and women, CBD works within the Endocannabinoid System or ECS. This is a cell-signaling system that was only discovered in the the late 1980’s-Early 1990’s. And it is responsible for all of your homeostasis functions, including sleep, mood, and fertility.

This system is all throughout your body, including your brain, your skin, and most of your organs. The main receptor sites are called CB1 and CB2.

Today, the CBD and ECS interaction is still in need of more research, however most experts believe that CBD works well within this system. Many believe that CBD acts like a Lock and Key mechanism. The Key – It allows helpful compounds to enter these receptors to function efficiently and properly; The Lock – it blocks harmful compounds from entering these sites.

More importantly, most people are not aware that their own bodies produce their own Endocannabinoids. Two have been identified so far – Anandamide (AEA), 2-Arachidonoylglyerol (2-AG).

Can CBD Help me with Fertility?

According to Dr. Michelle Ross high levels of Anandamide occur at ovulation and are clinically associated with a successful pregnancy. Conversely, low levels of this endocannabinoid may interfere with the ability to get pregnant or ovulation.

Further, CBD can boost Anandamide levels and for embryo implantation this is a problem. This procedure requires low levels of Anadamide so taking CBD may result in a failed pregnancy.

Indirect Help with fertility. Most know that everything in life is related. If you have high levels of stress or anxiety, then this can also affect your fertility. These both have negative affects on the body in both men and women.

What if I’m Pregnant or Nursing?

We advise to always speak with your OB-GYN or Healthcare professional before taking any CBD product. As of today, there has not been enough research as to whether CBD can hurt the fetus or a newborn. Because of this we advise that you should not start a CBD regimen just to be safe.

Are There any Side Effects?

Most agree that CBD is generally regarded as safe. However, some minor side effects have been reported, such as dry mouth, a short drop in blood pressure or fatigue. The biggest side effect we have seen is that if the user takes too much they might want to take a nap. Since its coming from a plant and all natural, most users will not notice anything negative, but many have reported a calm, relaxed state of mind.

What if I’m on Medications?

Like those taken for cholesterol or high blood pressure. Preliminary research shows it might affect the metabolism of these drugs. Faster or slower release of the drug. So it is always best to speak with your Healthcare provider.
