DISCOVERY OF CBD?
Roger Adams (January 2, 1889 – July 6, 1971) was an American organic chemist. He is best known for the eponymous Adams’ catalyst, and his work did much to determine the composition of naturally occurring substances such as complex plant alkaloids and vegetable oils. He Identified and isolated cannabidiol from Cannabis Sativa, and showed its relationship to cannabinol and tetrahydrocannabinol.
Even though Dr. Adams was technically the first to isolate CBD as a chemical compound, it’s tough to give him full credit for its discovery because he didn’t describe the compound’s chemical structure – that distinction belongs to Israeli scientist Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, who in 1963, identified CBD’s stereochemistry in his laboratory in Jerusalem at the Hebrew University. He was also was the first person to identify the structure of THC (1964), and is more or less considered the godfather of modern cannabis.
WHAT IS CBD?
CBD is short for Cannabidiol and it is a nonintoxicating, crystalline cannabinoid C21H30O2 found in cannabis and hemp that is sometimes used medicinally. It accounts for up to 40% of the plant’s extract and is one of 113 identified cannabinoids found in cannabis plants. CBD works with a large regulator in the body, the Endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS manufactures its own cannabinoids and is composed of many cannabinoid receptors. These are located throughout the body, and CBD primarily interacts with two of the most well-studied receptors, CB1 and CB2.
The receptors can be activated by the body’s naturally occurring cannabinoids or by phytocannabinoids such as CBD or THC. CBD’s functions in the ECS assist the body’s naturally occurring cannabinoids to activate the receptors, boosting their overall performance and ability to help maintain optimal balance within the body or homeostasis.
HEMP POTENTIAL AND MAKEUP

In addition, a study published in the issue of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, Korean Researchers found that CBD plays a powerful role in a process called “fat browning.” Researchers studied the effects of CBD on immature fat cells. The goal of the study was to explore CBD’s potential in treating and preventing individuals becoming overweight.
These findings are a collective result of CBD’s ability to induce fat browning, the process of converting white-colored fat tissue (WAT-white adipose tissue) into beige-colored fat tissue (BAT-brown and beige adipose tissue). While white-colored fat is known to store energy, beige-colored fat burns it. Decrease the expression of proteins involved in lipogenesis (fat cell generation). It also stimulates genes and proteins that enhance the breakdown and oxidation of fat. Increases the number and activity of mitochondria (which increases the body’s ability to burn calories). These aren’t the only way CBD impacts weight. One of the reasons the body stores fat in the first place is to protect the organs from damaging toxins.
CBD oil helps rid the body of harmful toxins, thus getting rid of one of the main reasons the body accumulates fat. Most CBD users don’t experience the cravings associated with medical marijuana. This is because THC is mostly responsible for the cravings; it has psychoactive side effects like the munchies. Because CBD oil only contains trace amounts of THC, and most reputable brands will even filter this miniscule amount (0.3%) out, so few people experience cravings while taking it.
Preliminary research suggests that CBD may reduce food intake and boost metabolism, which could promote weight loss. For example, animal studies indicate that CBD affects weight by interacting with CB1 and CB2 receptors in lymphoid tissue and the brain. These receptors are thought to play important roles in metabolism and food intake
