Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a condition in the mental health arena that is brought on by a traumatic or life-threatening event, either by witnessing it or experiencing it firsthand. This disorder can appear a few months after the event or even years later, and can be very debilitating to a person’s life, both mentally and physically.

People who are affected with PTSD can have symptoms that last for days to months to years. Sadly, as of today there is still no medication specifically designed to treat PTSD. Typically, psychotherapy and an anti-depression or anti-anxiety drugs are given.

Moreover, like how everyone grieves a bit differently, the same goes for people who experience trauma. Some will never develop PTSD even though they experienced a traumatic event. Whereas others it will almost become their identity if not treated.

With PTSD many sufferers use negative coping mechanisms such as alcohol, marijuana, or other drugs to temporarily take the edge off. However, what seems to help in the here and now, can ultimately lead to addictions and be self-destructive over the long term.

  3. Yoga – While you are getting the benefits of exercise you are also creating a relaxation method. It’s popular for a reason.
  4. Join a Support Group – Either online or in person. Group therapy helps many sufferers because you are finding other kindred spirits that are just like you, and you are sharing your story to empathetic listeners.
  5. Positive Repetition Mantras – Either silent or out loud; repeat a sacred or spiritual phrase in times of stress or anguish. Out loud is best because your own ears are hearing it.
  6. Aromatherapy – Lavender, Orange, Rose, Frankincense, Chamomile are some of the best for calming anger, stress, and anxiety. Put some on topically, diffuse them, or in a bath.
  7. Therapy – See a Mental Health Therapist via zoom or in person. Like the support groups talking to someone helps tremendously. One on One is more intimate if you don’t like groups of people.
  8. Pets – There are many programs for Veterans and others that offer emotional support pets. Or, if you have the resources adopt a pet, they need a home and your saving their life and opening up a spot for another.
